What do AI assistants answer when someone needs HVAC help today?
A short list of companies that say they work around the clock, usually with phone numbers. On 3 October 2026 we asked “My AC stopped working, who can come today in Phoenix?” five times in ChatGPT, three times in Gemini and once in Google AI Mode.
- ChatGPT named 11 companies across five runs, two of them every time. “24/7” appeared in all five answers, and the answers read as a list of who works around the clock plus their numbers.
- Gemini named 10, three of them on ChatGPT’s list.
- Google AI Mode named two, neither on ChatGPT’s list. 19 companies in total for one question.

Winter phrasing, same pattern
For “Furnace not working, who is open now in Minneapolis?”, all three ChatGPT answers mentioned 24/7 availability. One of its searches literally read “… open now October 3 2026”: the assistant inserts today’s date, so it reads your hours at the moment of the question. Holiday and seasonal hours on your Google profile matter on the day they apply.
Planned jobs: heat pumps
For “Can you recommend a good HVAC company in Dallas for a heat pump installation?”, ChatGPT named seven companies across three runs, one of them every time, while Gemini’s two answers named seven companies with only one in common with ChatGPT. Planned, higher-value jobs get a different shortlist from emergency calls, so you need pages for both.
Where the card data comes from
In the US, close to half of ChatGPT’s business cards in our checks (159 of 341) showed Yelp’s rating and review count. A Phoenix company with about 9,800 Google reviews appeared with 360, another with 758 appeared with 87, and a Dallas company with 425 appeared with 26. Gemini and AI Mode build from Google Maps. Google’s AI Overview didn’t appear for “ac repair phoenix” or “hvac company dallas”; for local HVAC questions, AI Mode is the Google surface to watch. AI Mode now has more than a billion monthly users (Google, May 2026).
Why accuracy beats volume for HVAC companies
If AI says you’re closed, or that you don’t cover a ZIP code you do, the homeowner calls the next name. We asked three engines whether one Phoenix HVAC company is open on weekends and what its hours are (our check, 3 Oct 2026; company anonymized). The company is open 24/7 according to its own site and Google profile.
| Engine | What it said | Right? |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | Open 24/7 | Yes |
| Google AI Mode | “Daily 5:00 AM, 12:00 AM”, plus “24/7 emergency service” in the same answer | No; hours from old Yelp and MapQuest listings |
| Perplexity | Open 24/7, and warned that a directory lists a different address | Yes |
Run this check for the facts that matter in HVAC:
| Fact | Fix it in |
|---|---|
| Regular, holiday and after-hours hours | Google profile, Yelp, every directory listing, site |
| Emergency service and typical response window | Google services, emergency page |
| Service area (cities or ZIP codes) | Google service area, directories, area pages |
| What you install and repair (heat pumps, furnaces, ductless, commercial) | Google services, site pages, directory categories |
| Licence and certifications | Site, Google description, directory fields |
The phone matters too. Google has announced that AI Mode will call businesses such as home-repair services on a user’s behalf in the US (Google, May 2026; an announcement, launch not verified by us). If an assistant calls during your listed hours, someone has to answer. More on this on the home services overview.
HVAC SEO fundamentals: Google profile, service pages and service areas
Google Business Profile
Correct primary and secondary categories, a full services list, hours including holiday and emergency hours, your real service area, photos of real technicians and vans, and replies to reviews. This profile feeds the map pack, Gemini, AI Mode and in Europe ChatGPT’s cards.
One page per service
AC repair, AC installation, heat pumps, furnace repair, ductless mini-splits, maintenance plans, indoor air quality, commercial HVAC. Each with what’s included, typical price ranges from your own invoices where you’re comfortable sharing them, brands you install, and how fast you can come.
Service-area pages where you dispatch
Only for areas where you work, with real local proof: jobs done there, technicians based nearby. ChatGPT’s recommendations reach far: 90% fall within 287 km of the searcher, against 64 km for AI Mode (BrightLocal, Sep 2026). A clearly stated service area keeps you out of answers for places you don’t cover.
A emergency page
When you answer, what after-hours visits cost, realistic arrival times. AI repeats “same-day” and “24/7” claims, and so do reviews when they’re wrong.
The seasonal HVAC calendar: what to update before each peak
Update your facts before demand arrives, then ask the AI again to see what it says.
| When | Update | Then check |
|---|---|---|
| Before cooling season | Summer hours, AC repair and installation pages, “same-day” wording, review requests after spring tune-ups | “AC stopped working, who can come today in [city]?” |
| Before heating season | Furnace and heat-pump pages, holiday hours, maintenance-plan renewals | “Furnace not working, who is open now in [city]?” |
| Before each public holiday | Holiday hours on Google and every directory that shows hours | The brand question: “Is [your company] open on [holiday]?” |
| When rebate rules change | Link to the official program page; don’t quote amounts that will go out of date | “Heat pump installation in [city]” |
Reviews, directories and the HVAC marketing mix
Ask for a review after every visit, without incentives or filtering out unhappy customers. 97% of people who use AI sometimes check its recommendation against real reviews (BrightLocal, 2026). The sites AI used for HVAC questions in our checks: HomeAdvisor and Expertise.com cited; Angi, HomeGuide, Birdeye, Home Depot’s services pages and ConsumerAffairs searched; plus local news sites and companies’ own websites. Keep Yelp accurate in the US, because it is often the rating on ChatGPT’s card.
Show your credentials the same way everywhere: state contractor licence, certifications you hold (EPA 608 for refrigerant work, for example) and manufacturer dealer status, each with a way to verify it. Local Services Ads, email and direct mail still have their place; they rent attention while you pay. Profiles, pages and reviews keep working when you stop.
How to get your HVAC company recommended by ChatGPT, and why it names a competitor
There is no known way to buy a place inside ChatGPT’s answer, and no code or file that makes it recommend you. Google’s own guidance is that optimizing for AI search is still SEO (Google Search Central, 2026). When a competitor is named and you aren’t, check whether they clearly say “24/7” where AI looks and you don’t; whether their hours are consistent and yours conflict between Google and Yelp; whether they have more recent reviews on the sites ChatGPT searches; and whether your service area includes the city in the question. Those are fixable in weeks, not quarters.
How to measure whether AI recommends your HVAC company
One screenshot misleads. Across our first round of checks, 44 of 90 businesses ChatGPT named appeared in only one of five runs, and BrightLocal found repeat answers overlap only 20–33% (BrightLocal, Sep 2026). Use a fixed set of questions (emergency, planned, brand), ask each at least three times per engine, before and after changes, and report “named in k of n” plus what each engine said about your hours. How we measure.
What we do for HVAC companies
- Audit with an accuracy check: what ChatGPT, Gemini and AI Mode say about your hours, emergency service and service area, against the truth, plus who gets named for your city’s emergency and planned-job questions.
- Fix: Google profile, Yelp and the directories AI reads, service and emergency pages, a review process.
- Pre-season checks: the same questions before cooling and heating season, reported as “named in k of n” per engine.
A 30-day plan in plain English before you pay, every account in your name, month to month. Deep audits start at $1,200, monitoring at $149 a month and maintenance at $790 a month. See pricing · Local SEO for AI search · Related: plumber SEO · All home services
FAQ
How do I get my HVAC company recommended by ChatGPT?
Make the facts ChatGPT pulls correct and complete: Google Business Profile with categories, hours including emergency service, and service area; consistent profiles on Yelp, HomeAdvisor, Angi and similar sites; and a page per service. Then build reviews steadily. We know of no way to pay for a place inside the answer, and nobody can guarantee a mention.
What is AI SEO for HVAC companies?
AI SEO, also called GEO, means making your HVAC business show up, and be described accurately, in answers from ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Mode. For a local HVAC company it builds on local SEO (profiles, reviews, directories, service pages), checked against what the engines say about your hours and service area.
AI says my HVAC company has the wrong hours. How do I fix it?
Find where the wrong hours come from. In our checks, Google AI Mode listed a 24/7 company with hours from old Yelp and MapQuest data. Correct the hours on every directory that shows them, set holiday and emergency hours on your Google profile, and re-check the answer after a few weeks.
How can an HVAC company get more customers from search in 2026?
Cover both scoreboards. Win the map pack with a complete Google profile and reviews, make sure AI assistants state your hours and service area correctly, answer the phone, and update everything before each season. Track booked jobs, not just calls or traffic.
Do AI Overviews show up for HVAC searches?
Rarely on local searches so far. In our checks Google showed no AI Overview for “ac repair phoenix” or “hvac company dallas”, though it did for 2 of 9 other local searches. For local HVAC questions, Google AI Mode and the map pack matter more.
